JOHNSON, La Lina Mae

La Lina Mae Johnson passed away on August 27, 2010. Linamae, as she was known to friends and family, was born July 26, 1933, in Whitefish, Montana, to Harry Stuck and Evelyn (Nichols) Locke.

Linamae grew up in Whitefish and graduated
from Whitefish High School in 1951. She was an active member of Holy Nativity Episcopal Church in Whitefish and was the youngest member of the Daughters of the King there.

Linamae met her future husband, John Johnson, at a dance at The Palm in Whitefish in 1951. John always said it was love at first sight. John asked to walk her home for weeks from her job at Cook's Grocery Store before she relented. John managed to fend off Linamae's many suitors, and they were married less than a year later on August 9, 1952, at Holy Nativity Episcopal Church in Whitefish, Montana.

Following their marriage the couple moved to Spokane, where Mr. Johnson was employed as a superintendent with Inland Power and Light, living in the same house for over 50 years. She attended beautician school in Spokane before working for Riverside Warehouse, Allied Van Lines, and the Great Northern Railway as a switchboard operator until the birth of their son, Jay, in 1960.

Linamae was outgoing, friendly, and loved working with people. When you had a conversation with Linamae, you had her complete attention; you felt like you were the most important person in the whole world because of it. Linamae volunteered with her husband at Holy Family Hospital for 20 years. During that time in addition to her volunteer services, she crocheted hundreds of baby hats for infants born at Holy Family. Linamae was a member of the Washington State (hospital) Auxiliary and served as the Spokane chapter's president for four years. During her tenure as president, Spokane hosted the state convention. Linamae was a talented oil painter and needlework artist and was a member of the Spokane Realistic Art Association. Mrs. Johnson was also a lifetime member of the Rebekah Lodge #145 in Spokane. In addition to her other activities, Linamae loved spending time at her vacation home at Twin Lakes in Idaho with her husband and family and always accompanied by a series of loyal family pets.
Linamae was preceded in death by her parents, brothers James Stuck and Larry Vervoort, and sister Dorothy White.

Linamae is survived by her husband, John, son Jay Johnson, granddaughter Crystal Johnson, great-granddaughter Lena Pierce, and many loving nieces and nephews.

At her request, there will be no services. Remembrances may be sent to Holy Family Auxiliary.

I'M FREEDon't grieve for me, for now I'm freeI'm following the path God laid for me.I took his hand when I heard him callI turned my back and left it all.I could not stay another dayTo laugh, to love, to work, or play.Tasks left undone must stay that way.I found that peace at close of day.If my parting has left a void,Then fill it with remembered joy.A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss.Ah, yes, these things, I too, will miss.Be not burdened with times of sorrow.I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow. My life's been full, I've savored much,Good friends, good times, a loved's one's touch.Perhaps my time seemed all too brief,
Don't lengthen it now with undue grief.Lift up your hearts and share with meGod wanted me now; He set me free....Author Unknown

ZYSKOWSKI,
Char
October 8, 1948 -
August 30, 2010

Char Zyskowski, loved and beautiful wife, mother and friend sweetly passed away at home on August 30th, 2010 with amazing courage and grace. Char ensured
her last weeks were spent laughing with her family and as many of her wonderful friends she could muster the energy to see. Her amazing energy and determination carried us all throughout her four year battle with ovarian cancer and she will be sorely missed.
Char is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 31 years, Marty Zyskowski, her children Betsy Speare, Michael Zyskowski and Gina Jamison, John Speare and Liza Mattana, Andrew and Serena Zyskowski and Jamie and Johanna Zyskowski as well as her grandchildren Whitney, Sara, Katie, Maddie, Mickey, Lilly, Scarlet, Livvy, Jack, Thomas and Juniper Rose. She was preceded in death by her father Jack Gerard in 1970, and her mother Betty Gerard in 2003.
Char was born Betty Charlotte Gerard on October 8th, 1948 in Philadelphia. At Age two, along with her new baby brother Jack, the family moved to Washington state - living in Fall City, Yakima, and Seattle as they followed her father's work with Stancatto School of Music teaching accordion (which he had never played before). When she was seven she moved to Downey, California as her father pursued his career as a talent agent in Hollywood - bringing such greats as Jack Walsh, the strongest man in the world, to dinner. Her summers were spent cooking with her Grandma and playing with her cousins in Fall City, Washington, which became a cornerstone of her love of food and family.
Char married John Speare, Jr. in 1966 from whom she was divorced in 1974 and had two children, Betsy and Johnny. The years following Char "pulled up her bootstraps" and managed to put herself through college while caring for two young children, graduating from Eastern Washington University in 1979. She spent a year of this time as a Vista Volunteer while living in a two-room cabin near Onion Creek, Washington telling stories to her children about the Bigfoot that was using the outhouse.
Char married the love of her life, Marty Zyskowski in 1979. It is impossible to describe the deep love and joyous partnership that they shared for the last 31 years. Marty and Char lovingly merged their five children into a cohesive family who value and love their time together as frequently as possible.
After moving to Spokane in 1979, Char worked in marketing & personnel at the Bon Marche, VNA, and Whitworth College, then a real estate agent and eventually as a pharmaceutical rep for Merck. At age 49 she moved to San Francisco for a year to pursue her dream of completing culinary school at the California Culinary Academy. She returned to Spokane and established the Apple Charlotte Cooking and Catering Company, which was dedicated to delivering great food and teaching the value of sharing lovingly prepared food in the Spokane community. She inspired hundreds of students and customers not only to pursue their own personal dreams but also to learn new skills while pulling together family and friends over good food.
A memorial will be held at Unity Church of Truth on Sunday, September 5th at 3pm (2900 S. Bernard St, Spokane, WA). Donations on Char's behalf should be made to the Cancer Care Northwest Foundation or Hospice of Spokane.
