- STEVENS,
- Albert R.
- Albert R. Steve "Al" was born July 2, 1928 in Spokane, Washington and passed away March 9, 2010 at the age of 81. Al was
- preceded in death by his
- parents and one brother Clewley Stevens, and a
- former wife Mae Sciaccotti.
- Al grew up in the Hillyard
- area, graduated from Rogers High and then attended Washington State College (now University) in Pullman for three years. With the Korean War in full swing, Al was asked to join the U.S. Army and he spent the next two years in the Military and was discharged as a Tech Sergeant having earned the Combat Infantrymen's Badge, Korean Service Medal with Bronze Service Star and a Letter of Commendation from the Commanding General 9th Infantry Regiment. Upon completing his tour of military duty, he returned stateside, moved to Ellensburg, and attended Central Washington State College (now a University) graduating with a B.A. Music Education Degree. While attending college, Al worked part-time for the Antlers Hotel in Ellensburg where Al's hard work greatly impressed the owners of the Hotel! Also, while in college, he met Janice Schwartz and they were married in 1958. From this marriage, two daughters were born; namely, Tonie and Laura Stevens. By this time, Al and Janice had moved to Seattle where Al had a music teaching position at Highline Jr. High School. During the summers, Al attended summer school in Ellensburg earning his Masters Degree in Administration. After several years in Seattle, he and his family moved to Ellensburg to take advantage of an opportunity to become the owners of the Antler's Hotel. They were proud owners of the Hotel for three years until an accidental fire destroyed the Hotel and Al found the need for other employment. He and Janice then purchased the Y Grill, Inc and operated this restaurant for the next four years -- Janice being the waitress and Al the cook! However; Al was still not happy, particularly with the 9-5 job, so he started buying "fixer up" properties then selling them. He enjoyed property management work and continued as a "Self Employed Landlord" for the balance of his career.
- Over the years, Al received many awards and recognitions for his involvement in civic activities both in Ellensburg and in Spokane. Al had a unique sense of humor and was noted for always having a ready repertoire of jokes! He loved to sing and was a member of the Millwood Presbyterian Church choir and a Deacon. One of the highlights of Al's life was his membership in Rotary both in Ellensburg and with the Spokane Valley Rotary. Al was President of the Ellensburg Club 1974-1975 and was #5060 District Governor's Area Representative 1976-1978. Al joined Spokane Valley Rotary in 1989 and was President during the 1991-1992 year. During this time, Al had perfect attendance for 43 years and established the "Albert R. Stevens Scholarship Fund" to award a yearly music scholarship to a deserving Rogers High School student or a student from any of the Valley High School.
- Al is survived by his daughters Tonie Lee and Laura Lee Stevens, Janice Stevens, Loretta and Rex Smith and other family members, Michael (Teresa) Sciaccotti, Jim Sciaccotti, six grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
- A Memorial Service will be held at Millwood Presbyterian Church, 3223 N. Marguerite Rd, Spokane on Friday March 12, 2010 at 3:30 P.M. Refreshments to follow. In liew of flowers, donations can be made to the Spokane Valley Rotary Charitable Trust for the Albert R. Stevens Scholarship Fund.
