- Spokane County
- BNSF Parkwater Site
- 5302 E Trent Ave, Spokane WA
- Facility Site ID No. 676
- Draft Remedial Investigation/Feasibility Study (RI/FS) Reports Available for Public Review & Comment September 3 through October 4, 2010.
- BNSF Railway Company (BNSF)entered into a legal agreement, called an Agreed Order, with the Washington State Department of Ecology in 2009. The Order required BNSF to conduct aRemedial Investigation andFeasibility Study (RI/FS) at the Parkwater Railyard site. Thepurpose of the Remedial Investigation was to further identify contaminants at the site, determine where they were located and how much might be in site-related soil and groundwater. The purpose of the Feasibility Study was to evaluate cleanup alternatives to address these contaminants.
- The facility, formerly known as Yardley, is one-half mile south of the Spokane River and lies over the Spokane Valley RathdrumPrairie Aquifer. The property covers about 130 acres that has been used as a railyard for nearly 100 years.
- The investigations confirmed certain contaminants exceeded state standards in seven of ten areas examined. Contaminants included: petroleum hydrocarbons, arsenic, cadmium, lead, mercury, naphthalene, methylene chloride, cPAH. Please see the RemedialInvestigation Report for details.
- Soil contamination in most areas is limited to shallow soil between the surface and 8 feet below the ground surface. The Fueling Area has deeper contamination between 12 and 65 feet below the ground surface. Monitoring results show treatment systems in the Fueling Area are successfully treating and removing petroleum hydrocarbons from soil and groundwater.
- Diesel-contaminated groundwater forms what is called a "plume" under the Fueling Area. Groundwater in the Fueling Area, where the spill occurred, is being addressed with the existing treatment system. There are no drinking water wells on the site, and contaminated groundwater doesn't leave the site. Therefore, the public is not exposed to contaminants in drinking water.
- Three alternatives were evaluated to address contaminants at the site. BNSF proposes Alternative No. 2 as the preferred cleanup action. Alternative No. 2: Remove contaminated soil near the Western Fruit Express, Materials Storage Building, Dismantling Spur (excluding the East and WestDebris Areas), Yardley Office, and Ralston Lead Track. Use asphalt or gravel as a protective cap to cover remaining contamination. Continue the current treatments of deep soil and groundwater at the Fueling Area.
- The Remedial Investigation/Feasibility Study reports are available for review at the followinglocations:
- Department of Ecology, Eastern Regional Office, 4601 N. Monroe, Spokane, WA 99205
- Ecology's website: http://www. ecy.wa.gov/programs/tcp/sites/ parkwater/railyard_hp.htm
- Argonne County Library, 4322 N. Argonne, Spokane, WA 99206
- Spokane Valley Library, 12004 E. Main, Spokane Valley, WA 99216
- Note: A document called the "Remedial System Evaluation" is available for review only. This document contains an evaluation of certain cleanup actions BNSF took at the site before entering into the formal cleanup process with Ecology.

- ZYSKOWSKI,
- Char
- October 8, 1948 -
- August 30, 2010
-
- Char Zyskowski, loved and beautiful wife, mother and friend sweetly passed away at home on August 30th, 2010 with amazing courage and grace. Char ensured
- her last weeks were spent laughing with her family and as many of her wonderful friends she could muster the energy to see. Her amazing energy and determination carried us all throughout her four year battle with ovarian cancer and she will be sorely missed.
-
- Char is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 31 years, Marty Zyskowski, her children Betsy Speare, Michael Zyskowski and Gina Jamison, John Speare and Liza Mattana, Andrew and Serena Zyskowski and Jamie and Johanna Zyskowski as well as her grandchildren Whitney, Sara, Katie, Maddie, Mickey, Lilly, Scarlet, Livvy, Jack, Thomas and Juniper Rose. She was preceded in death by her father Jack Gerard in 1970, and her mother Betty Gerard in 2003.
-
- Char was born Betty Charlotte Gerard on October 8th, 1948 in Philadelphia. At Age two, along with her new baby brother Jack, the family moved to Washington state - living in Fall City, Yakima, and Seattle as they followed her father's work with Stancatto School of Music teaching accordion (which he had never played before). When she was seven she moved to Downey, California as her father pursued his career as a talent agent in Hollywood - bringing such greats as Jack Walsh, the strongest man in the world, to dinner. Her summers were spent cooking with her Grandma and playing with her cousins in Fall City, Washington, which became a cornerstone of her love of food and family.
-
- Char married John Speare, Jr. in 1966 from whom she was divorced in 1974 and had two children, Betsy and Johnny. The years following Char "pulled up her bootstraps" and managed to put herself through college while caring for two young children, graduating from Eastern Washington University in 1979. She spent a year of this time as a Vista Volunteer while living in a two-room cabin near Onion Creek, Washington telling stories to her children about the Bigfoot that was using the outhouse.
-
- Char married the love of her life, Marty Zyskowski in 1979. It is impossible to describe the deep love and joyous partnership that they shared for the last 31 years. Marty and Char lovingly merged their five children into a cohesive family who value and love their time together as frequently as possible.
-
- After moving to Spokane in 1979, Char worked in marketing & personnel at the Bon Marche, VNA, and Whitworth College, then a real estate agent and eventually as a pharmaceutical rep for Merck. At age 49 she moved to San Francisco for a year to pursue her dream of completing culinary school at the California Culinary Academy. She returned to Spokane and established the Apple Charlotte Cooking and Catering Company, which was dedicated to delivering great food and teaching the value of sharing lovingly prepared food in the Spokane community. She inspired hundreds of students and customers not only to pursue their own personal dreams but also to learn new skills while pulling together family and friends over good food.
-
- A memorial will be held at Unity Church of Truth on Sunday, September 5th at 3pm (2900 S. Bernard St, Spokane, WA). Donations on Char's behalf should be made to the Cancer Care Northwest Foundation or Hospice of Spokane.
